Choosing the right bike store

Choosing the right bike store

The first question is – what is a bike store? Simple, it’s a low-height bike shed.

They have many advantages compared with a traditional shed:

  • Cost: the smaller footprint often means a lower price tag
  • Neighbourly: bike stores’ low height keeps it under hedge or fence height
  • Patio friendly: with a smaller footprint, they fit more easily onto patios, drives or terraces
  • Lighter: their lower weight means that you can often get away with a less substantial base (it still has to be flat, however!)

What’s the downside? The main disadvantage is space. With their lower height, they’re not well suited for traditional floor racks. Biohort and Lotus have ingenious hanger and ramp bike holders that overcome this issue.

Less sophisticated bike stores are really designed for bikes to be stacked against one another. This is inadvisable for expensive bikes, unless you physically shield them using foam sheets or padding to separate each bike.

Capacity

How many bikes can I fit in a Bike Store? Mountain bikes tend to be wider, kid's bikes significantly smaller... so it's hard to give a simple answer but as a quick guide, you can expect to get:

  • 1-2 bikes in a 6x2 bike store
  • 2-3 bikes in a 6x3 bike store
  • 3-4 bikes in a 6x4 bike store
  • 4-5 bikes in a 6x5 bike store
  • 5-6 bikes in a 6x6 bike store

Quality

We only list bike stores that are built to the same standard as our full height sheds. Internal bracing, a supported roof, secure structures... it's easy to find a cheap version of what we sell, but after a couple of winters, you will definitely know the difference.
